Impeachment motion against CJ Karki enters House

Kathmandu, May 5: A motion of impeachment brought against Chief Justice (now suspended) Sushila Karki was presented at the meeting of Legislature-Parliament today. 

A total of 249 lawmakers from the ruling partners- Nepali Congress and CPN (Maoist Centre)- on April 30 registered the impeachment motion against Karki at the Parliament Secretariat. Karki with being impeached was automatically suspended from the office. Speaker Onsari Gharti, amidst objections from the main opposition CPN (UML) informed the Parliament session that the House second session will commence the discussions on the motion from today itself. Though the Parliament meeting was summoned for 10:00 am today, it was started some 1:15 hrs late than the schedule. With the commencement of the meeting, Speaker Gharti informed the House that the schedules for zero and special hours were removed from today’s meeting and read out the impeachment motion included in the meeting agenda. The impeachment motion was registered by 149 lawmakers including Meen Bahadur Bishwokarma as per the Article 101(1) and Rule 168 (2) of the Legislature-Parliament Regulations -2073 BS. While tabling the motion by the Speaker, CPN (UML) lawmakers had chanted slogans in front of the rostrum of the Speaker. Before tabling the proposal, speaker Gharti had informed that she had removed other working procedures of the parliament scheduled for today, as Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Ajay Shankar Nayak was scheduled to present Nepal’s Constitution Amendment Bill (second amendment) 2073 BS and Minister for Health Gagan Thapa was scheduled to table the Insurance Bill, 2074 BS. Earlier, a meeting between the senior leaders of ruling parties and main opposition party UML had taken place but had concluded inconclusively. It may be noted that UML was reiterating to withdraw the impeachment motion registered against the chief justice Sushila Karki.
