Kathmandu : Former Prime Minister Dr Tulasi Giri has passed away at his residence at Siddhartha Colony in Budhanilakantha this morning. He was 93.
Former Prime Minister Giri, who has been under treatment for liver cancer, died at 6.00 am on Tuesday, informed his spouse Sarah Giri. He was also suffering from cardiac ailments of late.
Giri has been active in Nepali political arena from 1960 to 2005.
He had worked as a member of government under the leadership of first people-elected Prime Minister of Nepal, Bisweswor Prasad Koirala in 1959.
Born on 26 September 1926, Dr Giri was the Prime Minister from 1975 to 1977 and chairperson of the Council of Ministers (a de facto Prime Ministerial position) in 1963, and again in 1964 and 1965.
His dead body will be kept at his residence for final tribute and will be cremated at Pashupati Aryaghat on Wednesday, according to his family sources.
Dr Giri is survived by his spouse, two sons and four daughters.
