Nepalis among 429 ‘irregular migrants’ arrested in Turkey

Kathmandu : Local police personnel in a border city in Turkey have arrested 429 ‘irregular migrants’ on Wednesday and they also include a few Nepalis.

Anadolu Agency, the government-run news agency in Turkey,  people from Eritrea, Palestine, Bangladesh, Nepal, Syria and Afghanistan were arrested in Edirne, a Turkish province bordering Greece and Bulgaria. They were reportedly trying to cross to Europe illegally.

The arrestees have been referred to the provincial migration directorate.

“Turkey has been the main route for refugees trying to cross to Europe, especially since the beginning of the civil war in Syria,” the report says, “Some 268,000 irregular migrants were held in Turkey in 2018, according to the Interior Ministry.”
